The earliest known inhabitants of the cave were a prehistoric people called Troglodytes. The name “Mixta” comes from the Maltese word “mxett,” meaning “shelter during the winter months”. This suggests the cave was used by people and their livestock as a winter dwelling. The Knights of St. John after a pirate attack on Gozo in 1733, fortified the cave to secure Ramla Bay. They built an entrenchment wall that concealed the cave’s entrance and a rough stone wall with two small openings for cannons, which faced the sea to ambush enemy ships before they landed.

A little extra history

Beyond the Knights’ lookout role, Ramla’s defenses also included an entrenchment and a fougasse (a rock-cut mortar) integrated into the bay’s system; later accounts note the cave opening was partly blocked with stone, leaving two firing apertures toward the sea.
